Advanced chemical and bacteriological laboratory services

Research and development in water-related areas

Industry-specific training in both the scientific and operating fields

The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), in late 2008, introduced a Green Drop certification program for wastewater treatment works. This initiative is an effort to ensure that they progressively improve their operations so as to not impact negatively on the water bodies into which they discharge their product.

The proposed system aims at awarding water services authorities with Blue and/or Green Drop Status if they comply with drinking water and wastewater legislation and other best practices required by DWS. This incentive-based regulatory approach is a first for South Africa, and is internationally regarded as unique in the drinking water regulatory domain.

ERWAT has systems developed to enable us to continuously improve and to track progress towards the organisational strategy of achieving Green Drop certification for all our WWTW’s. Through the Green Drop improvement plan, quarterly Green Drop assessments are conducted to assist in identifying shortcomings and gaps which allow us to pursue the philosophy of continuous improvement.
