Providing capacity and optimising facilities
ERWAT’s strategic focus is to provide the right-sized works in the best geographic location, at the lowest cost.
Through various treatment technologies and continuous quality improvement and ongoing research and development into various processes, ERWAT utilises existing infrastructure to the maximum and makes optimum use of all the available resources. Technologies include biological trickling filters and activated sludge and a combination thereof. In response to government’s mandate to protect the country’s scarce water resources, ERWAT implements more energy-efficient technologies to improve the quality of the receiving surface waters. These include: Nereda® wastewater treatment technology, new age biofilters with plastic media as well as HYBACS® technology.
To stay abreast of new technologies, ERWAT conducts research in close collaboration with Stellenbosch University and works in close co-operation with the Water Research Commission (WRC).
