ERWAT recently won seven Green Drop awards and one award for the top three Water Care Works (WCW’s) in the country.

This announcement was made during the release of the Green Drop report and awards ceremony on 1 April 2022, attended by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, Minister Senzo Mchunu.

ERWAT has participated in the Green Drop certification for wastewater since its inception in 2008 by the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS), that aimed to set standards higher than minimum requirements in a quest for all water services authorities to reach exceptional levels of excellence.

Although the certification programs for both the Green Drop (wastewater) and the Blue Drop (drinking water) were not implemented since 2014, the Department of Water and Sanitation has since revitalised the Green Drop Certification programme to ensure the overall improvement of municipal wastewater management.

Various criteria are evaluated, namely the management of capacity and the environment, as well as financial and technical management. Quality compliance is also an important criterion.

The Ekurhuleni Water Care Company, ERWAT, has since its inception in 1992 provided bulk wastewater conveyance systems, while operating 19 WCWs in the Ekurhuleni area, including the Lesedi Local Municipality and a small portion of Johannesburg.

During the awards ceremony, ERWAT was awarded with a total of seven Green Drop awards, an excellent achievement against serious challenges with ageing infrastructure and limited funds.

The Daveyton WCW near Benoni was also announced as one of top three best performing wastewater treatment systems.

The following six WCWs in Ekurhuleni received Green Drop certification, namely Rondebult, Herbert Bickley, JP Marais, Esther Park, Carl Grundlingh and Daveyton, while the Ratanda WCW in Lesedi also received the award.

During the awards ceremony minister Senzo Mchunu said that it was indeed a special occasion for award winners, as it demonstrates that they are doing things right. He also urged all municipalities, water entities and the private sector to continue striving towards the theme: Water is Life, Sanitation is Dignity.

The Acting Managing Director of ERWAT, Mr Kennedy Chihota, expressed his immense pride in ERWAT’s achievements. He mentioned that ERWAT will continue to be a leader in the wastewater industry by providing sustainable, affordable, quality water care and resource recovery services. “These awards portray ERWAT’s commitment to deliver excellent services to both the municipal and industrial wastewater sectors towards a sustainable future”, Kennedy said.
